Upon divorce, the marriage is dissolved with effect also against third parties. It is important to note, however, that affinity (relationship by marriage) is expressly preserved by law even after dissolution (see Article 1462(b) of the Greek Civil Code). This means that, for example, the relationship between former in-laws and the children of the marriage continues to be legally recognised for certain purposes even after the divorce is finalised.

The divorce judgment or notarial deed must be registered in the civil registry records. Third parties are deemed to have notice of the dissolution from the date of registration, and from that date the former spouses may not be held jointly liable to each other’s creditors for debts incurred after dissolution, subject to certain exceptions under matrimonial property law.
